The Sustainable Fisheries
Fund is designed to promote the independent certification of environmentally
sustainable fisheries and seafood globally. The Fund provides grants
to eligible fishing organizations to help defray the cost of fishery
pre-assessments, full assessments, and associated capacity building
efforts. The Fund also provides small grants to eligible stakeholder
organizations to encourage their constructive participation in fishery
assessments. The Sustainable Fisheries Fund is administered through
the Sacramento, California based Resources Legacy Fund.
The Fund has four principle goals:
- To provide grants for fishery pre-assessments
to fisheries that are economically challenged or strategically
important to advance marine conservation goals.
- To provide grants (and/or loans)
for fishery full-assessments to fisheries that are economically
challenged or strategically important to advance marine conservation
goals.
- To provide small grants to encourage
broad-based stakeholder participation in fishery assessments.
- To provide grants to support regional
strategic planning of fisheries assessment and to build fisheries'
capacity to address deficiencies identified through pre-assessment
and full assessment activities.
To apply for these
funds, please submit a pre-proposal to W. John Schmidt, Executive
Director of the Resources Legacy Fund. The pre-proposal should include
a description of the organization, background on the proposed project,
and the specific request for which the funds are intended. Other
pertinent information about the project, such as potential support
or opposition and potential funding partners, should be included
as well. Finally, the pre-proposal, which should be no more than
three pages in length, must also include a proposed detailed project
budget. SFF will attempt to accommodate language barriers for non-English
speaking applicants on a case-by-case basis. The SFF will review
the pre-proposal and will contact those applicants from whom a full
proposal is sought.
